Gemstone beads are sold by diameter in millimetres and usually on strands. Once you know the bead size and strand length, you can calculate both the number of beads and thread thickness before ordering – avoiding a thread that won’t fit the hole, or a bracelet that’s missing five beads.

Hole size determines the thread
Stone beads typically have a drill hole of around 0.8-1 mm, and faceted or smaller beads can have even smaller holes. This means that regular 1 mm waxed cord and thicker leather cord rarely fit – instead, choose beading wire, beading thread, or thin elastic for drilled natural stones.
If the bracelet is to be elasticated, choose an elastic that fills the hole without needing to be forced through. An elastic forced through will wear from the inside and break faster.
Strand lengths are not standardised
Most stone strands are around 38-40 cm, but this varies between stone types and suppliers, and faceted beads are often slightly flatter than round ones. Always check the measurement of the individual item if you are relying on a specific bead count.
How to calculate your usage
- Measure the desired finished length – e.g. 18 cm bracelet including clasp.
- Subtract the clasp's length if using a lobster clasp and end tubes (typically 1-2 cm).
- Divide by the bead's diameter in mm: 160 mm / 8 mm = 20 beads.
- Allow 1-2 beads as a buffer – natural stones vary in size.
Shape and facet change the look
Round beads create a classic, serene bracelet. Faceted beads reflect more light and appear smaller than their diameter suggests. Rondelles take up less length than round beads of the same size, so you'll typically need more of them for the same length.

For an 18cm bracelet, you'll need approximately 22 x 8mm beads. If using a clasp and end tubes, allow for 1-2 fewer beads. Always buy a couple of extras, as natural stones vary in size.
