Most jewellery doesn't wear out; it's looked after incorrectly. Silver tarnishes, plating wears off with polishing cloths, and porous stones don't tolerate ultrasound. Here's a practical care guide you can also share with your customers.

How to care for your jewellery

Tarnish is not a defect: Silver reacts naturally with sulphur in the air – it can be polished away again.

Storage makes the biggest difference: Dry, dark and airtight is the cheapest jewellery care there is.

Remove tarnish from silver

Use a silver polishing cloth and wipe with light movements. If tarnish is in patterns and indentations, a silver dip can help – but do not use it on jewellery with pearls, glued stones, or gold-plated surfaces.

Note: a slight darkening in indentations often enhances the detail in a piece of jewellery and is not something you need to remove.

Order of wear in the morning

  • Cream, perfume, and hairspray first – jewellery on last.
  • Remove jewellery before bathing, swimming, sauna, and exercise (except for water-resistant steel components).
  • Wipe jewellery with a soft cloth before storing.

Scratch-free storage

Store jewellery separately. Hard stones and steel components can scratch soft silver and pearls if kept in the same container. A small pouch or box per item solves this problem – and makes the item ready for sale.

For jewellery makers and sellers

Include a small care card in the box. It costs almost nothing, reduces complaints about tarnishing and worn plating, and signals that you stand by the quality of your craftsmanship.

FAQ

Can I use toothpaste to polish silver?

We do not recommend it. Toothpaste contains abrasives that can scratch soft silver and wear away plating. Use a silver polishing cloth instead.

Can plated jewellery get wet?

PVD-plated steel tolerates water well. Vermeil and gold-plated brass retain their colour best if the jewellery is removed first.

How do I store silver to prevent tarnishing?

In a dry, dark, and as airtight as possible environment – for example, in a small zip-lock bag or a box. Avoid the bathroom.

Are genuine stones safe for ultrasonic cleaning?

Many are not. Porous and layered stones, as well as freshwater pearls, can be damaged. Wipe them with a soft cloth instead.
