It's the contact surface that matters
What touches the skin for the longest causes the most issues: ear hooks, ear studs, watch clasps, and rings. A brass pendant on a silver chain is rarely a problem – an ear hook in the same material can be. Therefore, prioritise your budget on fittings in sterling silver or 316L.

- About 316L: write "surgical steel – tolerated by most", not "nickel-free".
- Avoid "hypoallergenic" as a guarantee; it is not a protected term.
- Always specify the material on the product so the customer can make an informed decision.
EU Nickel Regulations
Jewellery and other products in prolonged skin contact are subject to EU regulations regarding the permissible nickel release. This also applies to components you assemble and sell – so choose your findings carefully if you are selling.
When a customer still reacts
Reactions can also be due to soap or cream trapped under a piece of jewellery, or a gold-plated layer wearing through to the base metal. Recommend removing jewellery when bathing or exercising, and wiping it with a soft cloth.

Is sterling silver nickel-free?
Yes. 925 sterling silver consists of 92.5% silver and typically copper for the remainder – there is no nickel in the alloy.
Can I wear surgical steel if I have a nickel allergy?
Most people can. Nickel is part of the alloy, but in 316L it is so firmly bound that its release is very low. For severe allergies, we recommend 925 sterling silver.
Why does brass turn my skin green?
The copper in brass reacts with sweat, creating a harmless, greenish discolouration. It washes off and is not an allergic reaction.
Are plated components hypoallergenic?
As long as the plating is intact, it is the gold that touches the skin. If it wears through, the base metal determines this – so the choice of base metal is important.
