Cryolite – The Mineral That Almost Vanished

Cryolite was mined in Ivittuut, South Greenland, and for many decades was of great industrial importance, used in the production of aluminium. Mining has ceased, and the original deposit area is largely depleted. Therefore, Greenlandic cryolite is today primarily a collector's mineral.

This mineral is soft – around 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale – and not suitable for jewellery that is worn. It is best displayed as a specimen.

Eudialyte – the red in kakortokite

Eudialyte is a complex zirconium-bearing silicate found in agpaitic rocks. In South Greenland, it occurs in quantities that make it one of the most characteristic red components in local rocks, including kakortokite. Its colour is typically raspberry red to brownish-red, and crystals are often scattered within a dark matrix.

Ruby from West Greenland

In the Aappaluttoq area near Fiskenæsset, corundum of ruby and pink sapphire quality is found. This deposit has been commercially mined, and the material is typically sold with documentation of origin. When purchasing Greenlandic ruby, this documentation is a significant part of its value.

Ruby: between geology and symbolism

Greenlandic rubies originate from nearly three-billion-year-old bedrock in the Aappaluttoq area near Fiskenæsset. Aappaluttoq means 'red' in Greenlandic. When European geologists began exploring the area, local Kalaallit people already knew about the red stones and helped identify deposits along the southwest coast. The red corundum often occurs within a dark matrix, allowing the stone to retain a clear trace of its landscape and origin.

Across historical cultures, ruby has been associated with love, courage, status, and vitality. Many of these symbols are echoed in contemporary crystal spirituality. These are cultural and spiritual interpretations without documented physical or psychological effects.
