Fossils and Dinosaur Bones – Understanding Your Purchase
A fossil is the remains or impression of a prehistoric animal or plant, preserved in rock over a very long period. In many fossils, the original material is gradually replaced by minerals – hence they are called petrified. Here's what you should know before buying an ammonite, a shark tooth, or a piece of dinosaur bone.
What a Collector Needs to Know

How does a fossil form?
When an animal is rapidly covered by sediment, its remains are protected from decomposition. Over very long periods, mineral-rich water seeps through the sediment, and the hard parts – bones, teeth, shells – are gradually replaced by minerals. The result is a stone that preserves the original structure in detail.
This is precisely why, in a polished dinosaur bone, you can often see the bone's internal cellular pattern: it's the structure that has been copied in mineral.
Preparation and repair are normal
Most fossils on the market are prepared – cleaned of rock, ground or polished on a surface to reveal their structure. Larger pieces may be assembled from fragments or stabilised because the material is fragile after millions of years in the earth. This is common practice in the fossil industry and not the same as a replica.

Fossils as Gifts and Decoration
- Shark teeth and small ammonites are the most accessible and popular for children and beginner collectors.
- Polished slices and orthoceras serve as decoration on shelves or desks.
- A small display box or stand enhances both the gift and the presentation of your collection.
Care and Handling
Fossils generally tolerate handling, but fragile edges and prepared joints can be damaged by impacts or prolonged soaking. Wipe them with a dry or lightly damp cloth, and avoid cleaning agents and ultrasonic cleaners. Avoid direct, strong sunlight on fossils with coloured matrix for extended periods.
FAQ
Are your fossils genuine?
Yes, we sell genuine fossils. As is common in the industry, most pieces are prepared – cleaned, polished, or stabilised – to reveal their structure and ensure the material can be handled.
How can you tell if a dinosaur bone is genuine?
Typically, in a polished cross-section, you can see the bone's internal cellular pattern, preserved within the mineral. If you are unsure about a specific piece, you are welcome to visit our shop to inspect it.
Are fossils suitable for children?
Shark teeth and small ammonites are robust and popular with children. Fragile, prepared pieces and sharp crystal points are better suited for adult collectors.
Can fossils be used in jewellery?
Yes – small ammonites, shark teeth, and polished slices can be wire-wrapped or glued onto a bail. Choose a piece without loose edges if it is to be worn daily.
