Miyuki beads are sorted by a system where a higher number means a smaller bead. It's logical once you know it – and confusing the first time you order. Here's an overview of the sizes and types we stock, and what they are used for.

Choose correctly the first time

Delica or seed bead?

Delicas are tubular with straight sides and a large hole. They sit closely together, making patterns sharp – which is why they're used for peyote and brick stitch with motifs. Round seed beads have softer edges and provide a more organic, handcrafted look.

If you're following a pattern, always check which type the pattern was designed for: the same number of beads won't fill the same space in Delicas and seed beads.

Thread and needle

  • 11/0 and Delica: thin beading thread and a beading needle that can pass through the hole multiple times.
  • 15/0: the thinnest thread – very small hole.
  • 6/0 and 8/0: can also be used with elastic for quick bracelets.
  • Tila: two holes mean two passes – plan the sequence before you sew.

How many beads do I need?

For a woven bracelet in 11/0, approx. 17 cm and 10 beads wide, you typically need several thousand beads. It's better to buy one pack too many than too few: dye lots can vary slightly, and it will show if you run out mid-project.

Finishes

Miyuki are available in glossy, matte, opaque, transparent, metallic, and AB-coated variants. Matte and metallic finishes may wear with heavy use and frequent contact with perfume – good to know if you sell your jewellery.

What does 11/0 mean?

It's a size measurement for seed beads, where a higher number means a smaller bead. 11/0 is approx. 2 mm and is the most commonly used size for woven jewellery.

Can I mix Delica and seed beads in the same project?

Yes, but they have different shapes and heights, so the surface won't be perfectly even. For pattern weaving, you should stick to one type.

Which thread is used for Miyuki?

A thin, durable beading thread that can pass through the same bead multiple times. For bracelets that need to be stretched over the hand, you can use elastic beading cord in 6/0 and 8/0.

Are Tila beads difficult to work with?

No, but the two holes require you to plan the sequence. Start with a simple single-row bracelet before moving on to multi-row patterns.
