Buy enough yarn from the same dye lot

Yarn is dyed in batches, and two balls of the same colour may vary slightly if they come from different dye lots. Therefore, buy all the yarn for your project at once, and check the dye lot number on the ball band. If you do need to use two different dye lots, you can knit two rows with one and two with the other during the transition to make the change imperceptible.

Make a gauge swatch – even when you don't feel like it

The knitting gauge on the ball band is measured with a specific needle size, but how tightly you knit yourself determines the outcome. Knit a swatch of at least 12 × 12 cm, measure 10 cm in the middle and count stitches and rows. If it doesn't match, change your needle size – not the pattern.

Fibres and their properties

  • Cotton: strong, cool, and washable. Lacks elasticity, resulting in a firm stitch pattern.
  • Wool: warm, elastic, and moisture-wicking. Can felt with high temperature and friction.
  • Superwash Wool: treated wool that can be machine washed on a wool programme.
  • Mohair/Silk (Kid): very light and airy, often used as a carry-along thread with other yarns.
  • Polyamide: added to sock yarn for durability at the heel and toe.
  • Polyester (Fake Fur, Ribbon): dimensionally stable novelty yarn for effect rather than warmth.

Washing & Care Instructions

Always follow the washing instructions on the yarn band. Wool should be washed cool on a wool programme or by hand with wool soap and dried flat to prevent distortion. Cotton can withstand regular machine washing but may shrink the first time – which is a good reason to wash your swatch before deciding. Novelty yarns like fake fur should be hand washed cool and air-dried rather than tumble-dried.

FAQ

How much yarn do I need?

The pattern indicates consumption in grams or number of balls for a specific gauge. If you knit looser than the pattern, you'll use less yarn – if you knit tighter, you'll use more. It's always better to buy an extra ball from the same dye lot.

What does 8/4 mean on cotton yarn?

8/4 describes the yarn's thickness and number of plies: the yarn consists of four plies of size 8. This is the classic quality for dishcloths, amigurumi, and crocheted bags.

Can I machine wash wool yarn?

Only if the yarn band states 'superwash' or 'machine wash on wool programme'. Regular wool will felt with heat and friction and should be hand washed with wool soap and dried flat.

Which yarn is best for amigurumi?

Cotton 8/4 is the most commonly used because it creates a firm stitch definition, so the stuffing doesn't show through, and the figure maintains its shape after washing.
